I’ve found a new appreciation for maternity and baby photography after having had Kaden, especially since I enjoyed my pregnancy (yes, even though I was shooting weddings up until I was 37 weeks along). There’s the aspect of the excitement and anticipation of a life change and also there’s something incredibly beautiful about a baby bump. I shot Vanessa and Chris earlier in the summer to celebrate their state of pre-babyhood/pre-parenthood – and I can’t wait to visit them again this fall to capture their little one! Some of my favorite below:

…quite possibly our son.

We’re taking a small blogging break from wedding photography and couples to give you all a small visual update. 12 weeks ago a tiny little boy joined us and well, we’ve fallen head over heels in love. Watching him grow chubbier and outgrowing his clothes faster than we can rotate through them has been incredible. Tim and I have been reduced to absolute emotional and sentimental mushballs when it comes to Kaden – every gesture and coo has either of us running for our iPhone or camera – whichever is closer. Seriously, it was like Christmas morning over here when Kaden gave us his first big gummy smile.

Throughout the pregnancy, family, friends, clients and wedding guests all predicted that our baby was going to be photographed a lot. No kidding. I wonder if our big shiny lenses are as familiar a sight to Kaden as our my and Tim’s faces. We’re quite happy to share a very small set of some our favorite images from the past couple of months:

Introducing Kaden Isaiah

10 fingers and 10 toes. In the nine months that Tim and I were waiting for our baby to arrive we joked about all these things we wished for. “I hope he’s a super smart baby.” “He’d better be musical!” “I hope we don’t have a colicky baby and I hope he sleeps through the night!” But at the end of the day, we knew that what we wished for the most was a healthy child – above and beyond all else. Those things you take for granted suddenly become tiny miracles – his little nose, his miniscule fingernails, his voracious appetite. Every sigh, whimper, hiccup and yes, even cry are things that we marvel at (although the crying is likely going to lose its novelty really, really fast). Tim and I are completely bowled over that we are parents to this tiny little boy, and amazed at every little thing he does.

Because we share on this blog the moments of our brides’ and grooms’ weddings, it only seems fitting to share a few images of the most significant event of our life so far – or rather, the moments and days following it (no birthing images here!). We proudly introduce here our little boy, Kaden Isaiah:

It’s been quite a year for our family here at the Chin household. We take a lot of pride in what we do, capturing moments of the lives of all the wonderful people we get to meet along the way. We absolutely love what we do, but sadly, somehow we as photographers don’t take much opportunity to document our own lives. This was most apparent and most painful this past January when we lost my dad very suddenly to a heart attack. Not a day has gone by since where I don’t think of him, sigh, take a deep breath and then try my best to move on.

Grief is a very strange thing, in the midst of such deep sadness, you find immense appreciation for the joy that surrounds you. In a way, pain makes you so acutely aware of the blessings that are in your life . When I wake up each morning I get to live another day with my soulmate. Angela has been such a blessing to me and my family through our toughest of times. She has been strong and caring, beautiful and wise, and simply all-around amazing. I am so proud that she is going to be the mother of my children.

This past week we took a little time for ourselves. As many of you know we are expecting a little addition to the family any day now, and we didn’t want to let this opportunity to pass by without capturing our anticipation in image. In many ways, even though he’s not out in the world yet, our baby boy has also been such a blessing to us. Such miracles make you believe that joy can truly break the sorrow. I will never allow myself to forget the first time we heard his heart beat, or the first ultrasound, or the first swift kick to the face when I put my ear up to Ange’s belly, or Ange’s persistent cravings for cupcakes.

It’s so awesome when we get to photograph another stage of our wedding clients’ lives. We shot Andrew and Nameera’s beautiful wedding two summers ago and we found ourselves back in Toronto taking pictures of their adorable little baby girl! At the stage when she is discovering different kinds of food and starting to play, we got to capture a part of this family’s little routine during our shoot. Check out some of our favorite images:
