Sophie, Francis and Raphael: Just Because

It doesn’t have to be a momentous occasion in order to have your picture taken. I revel in the everyday, in its honesty and realness. So having the opportunity to capture a little family taking in a beautiful day in their home environment and just being themselves is a privilege for Tim and me. We took these images of Sophie, Francis and their adorable little boy Raphael in their neighbourhood, enjoying a balmy afternoon and loving just being a family. Some of our favorite shots below:

It’s been quite a year for our family here at the Chin household. We take a lot of pride in what we do, capturing moments of the lives of all the wonderful people we get to meet along the way. We absolutely love what we do, but sadly, somehow we as photographers don’t take much opportunity to document our own lives. This was most apparent and most painful this past January when we lost my dad very suddenly to a heart attack. Not a day has gone by since where I don’t think of him, sigh, take a deep breath and then try my best to move on.

Grief is a very strange thing, in the midst of such deep sadness, you find immense appreciation for the joy that surrounds you. In a way, pain makes you so acutely aware of the blessings that are in your life . When I wake up each morning I get to live another day with my soulmate. Angela has been such a blessing to me and my family through our toughest of times. She has been strong and caring, beautiful and wise, and simply all-around amazing. I am so proud that she is going to be the mother of my children.

This past week we took a little time for ourselves. As many of you know we are expecting a little addition to the family any day now, and we didn’t want to let this opportunity to pass by without capturing our anticipation in image. In many ways, even though he’s not out in the world yet, our baby boy has also been such a blessing to us. Such miracles make you believe that joy can truly break the sorrow. I will never allow myself to forget the first time we heard his heart beat, or the first ultrasound, or the first swift kick to the face when I put my ear up to Ange’s belly, or Ange’s persistent cravings for cupcakes.

BRANDY+TED (and OLLIE too!)

A couple of weekends ago we had the pleasure of shooting Brandy and Ted and their adorable little boy for their engagement shoot. Since they used to live in the area, Lafontaine Park is of their favorite places in Montreal. I just loved that Brandy and Ted brought Ollie along for their shoot – their upcoming wedding is going to be a real celebration of them as a family and making vows to be one forever. If there’s one word that I can use to describe this lovely couple, it’s this: genuine. They wanted every part of this shoot to be true to who they are as people and to their personalities, and Tim and I were totally rolling with that because we honestly feel that’s our job as photographers – capturing the true spirit of our clients. So, scissor kicks in the middle of an open field? Yup, totally them! Sipping on bowls of latte on a sidewalk cafe? Only one of their favorite things to do! Following a cat down the street so Ollie could pet him? That’s why their little boy is so inquisitive and spirited. We had so much fun doing their shoot and hanging out with them – we can’t wait for their wedding! Check out some of our favorite images below:

Family: the one thing that you can count on to be there for you at all times, in seasons of joy and of sorrow and everything in between. Though the bonds between parents and their children, brothers and sisters are undeniably strong, family transcends people who are related and encompasses those who matter most in your life. We had the pleasure of photographing the Ma family last weekend up in Tremblant, as they enjoyed a weekend all together gathered under one roof, as they laughed and goofed off. Tim and I want to wish all our readers a belated Merry Christmas and also a Happy New Year! The blog has been lacking an update in the past couple of weeks but we took some time off to travel, relax and see lots of family over the holidays. We’ve got a busy week ahead of us too – a photographer’s conference next week and then the Marions Nous wedding show in Place Bonaventure next weekend.

We’ve got quite a few shoots and a wedding in the wings waiting to be blogged, and I’ve got a year-end retrospective that I’m hoping to share with you by, er, the year end (if not January 1st!) but I leave you all now with a few shots from a really fun photoshoot that we did in early December with Aimee, Danny and their two darling little boys. Aimee who is the prolific blogger and gourmande extrodinare from Under the High Chair makes an appearance on our blog on a regular basis as we are good friends with the Bourques and big fans of her food. Tim and I have been privileged to photograph her family over the past couple of years and we delighted to do a shoot as an homage to the sadly-now-folded Gourmet magazine in time for the holidays. We set up our kitchen here at Tim Chin Photography like a studio and Aimee brought the concept, the yummy food and family to get that perfect shot that would capture the spirit of their family. If you think they all look a little Mad Men-esque (one of our favorite shows) it’s because that was the look we were going for. Looking at these images makes Tim and me smile so we’ve posted a few of them here – enjoy!
