The result of our little project actually got picked up recently by unstage.com, a daily blog that showcases the best in visual arts. Our blended video called “Big Apple Fusion” which was put together by Blayre was features as one of the “20 incredible videos created with the Canon 7D” (In case you’re wondering and are a photography gearhead, Blayre shot the video with the 7Ds while Tim and I shoot with 5Ds and 5DmII’s). We’re extremely flattered – check out the video here, and scroll down to the 10th video.

So no pretty wedding pics today, but as we’ve shared in an earlier post Tim and I are committed to taking more pictures of our families and cherishing every single second we get to spend with them. In the past we’ve been pretty bad at taking pictures on trips in general – in fact we totally revert to taking tourist snaps, but we were a lot more deliberate this time around. Thanks for reading and looking!

Mere days before, Tim and I had just attended a refreshing series of seminars at an event called Mystic 5 (images and a blog post to come soon) where we came away inspired to take more pictures of the people we love in our lives – our parents, our siblings, our friends – and each other. We looked at each other at the close of the last session and I said, "Tim, doesn’t this make you want to go straight home and take pictures of your parents together?" We both realized just how much we wanted to remember their faces, their gestures, their expressions.

But that last photo session was not to be. Instead, we have spent the past week flipping through old family photographs – chuckling at the fashion sense in the seventies, smiling fondly back at the beaming smiles of Tim’s parents in their youth. We felt a pang in our hearts going through images of Tim with his dad – as a little boy building a chair together, sauntering down a park path, and years later – his dad beaming proudly on the wedding days of his children. Going through the mounds of photographs – colors and edges slightly faded with age – we found ourselves immersed in a visual history of his life. Images breathed, recalled and imparted stories, personality and love.

So this is why we do what we do.

I think we’ve both agreed that we need to get in front of the lens more – for each other and for our children to come. I need to remember how Tim looks when he’s about to play yet another prank on me. Tim needs to remember my face when I’m deliriously happy (usually after a productive shopping spree!). Because those small, seemingly insignificant visuals will mean the world one day. Photographs are important. And we say this not just because we’re photographers – though we both have a new sense of purpose for the work we do – but as a child to our parents, as siblings, and as husband and wife. Your life, your relationships, the people you love need to be documented and remembered.

A few gems we’ve come upon this week:

We’ve got quite a few shoots and a wedding in the wings waiting to be blogged, and I’ve got a year-end retrospective that I’m hoping to share with you by, er, the year end (if not January 1st!) but I leave you all now with a few shots from a really fun photoshoot that we did in early December with Aimee, Danny and their two darling little boys. Aimee who is the prolific blogger and gourmande extrodinare from Under the High Chair makes an appearance on our blog on a regular basis as we are good friends with the Bourques and big fans of her food. Tim and I have been privileged to photograph her family over the past couple of years and we delighted to do a shoot as an homage to the sadly-now-folded Gourmet magazine in time for the holidays. We set up our kitchen here at Tim Chin Photography like a studio and Aimee brought the concept, the yummy food and family to get that perfect shot that would capture the spirit of their family. If you think they all look a little Mad Men-esque (one of our favorite shows) it’s because that was the look we were going for. Looking at these images makes Tim and me smile so we’ve posted a few of them here – enjoy!
